Music That Feels Good

Producers Have to Evolve

A longtime friend of mine told me that I was always evolving. She told me that I keep reinventing myself. I didn’t know that when she looked at me, looked at my life… that she saw constant change. At first I was a little offended, until she said, “you’re always evolving….just like Oprah.” Then I smiled, well it was more like a grin. LOL! For me that was a huge compliment and I quickly embraced it.

It’s often been said that if you want something different, you’re gonna have to do something different. But doing something different always means change and that’s not always easy. Actually, for change to take place you’re gonna have to move outside of your comfort zone. As uncomfortable as it has made me,that’s what I’ve had to do.
At first I thought the changes that I wanted to implement would be a piece of cake, but I was looking at the big picture and not the details, the components that make up the big picture. I wasn’t really paying attention to the details, I just saw the end result.
Production wise I know that to achieve the kind of musical result that I aim for, I have to pay attention to musical details, but that didn’t quite translate over for me technologically. Putting together a show in a format that I was not familiar with, overwhelmed me. At times I found myself staring at the computer monitor, with all the stuff I needed open to produce a show. It was like trying to read a foreign language! My brain was scattered, my mind was blank..complete overload! I wanted to scream, I wanted to cry and I wanted to give up. I was totally outside of my comfort zone. But I was ready for change and I knew that I needed to grow to the level of change that I desired.
I also knew that when the student is ready, the teacher appears. I began calling people that I respected in the music industry and those who didn’t mind sharing with me, teaching me in areas that were new to me. I read books, listened to Cd’s, watched video’s etc. I also studied others who were leaders in the game. It was a change for me, but it also meant growth. I’m so happy that I launched out into the deep cause it just gets easier for me to swim in deep waters.
Change…it’s not easy…but it’s necessary… As producers we have to evolve. The sounds in the music industry are always changing. Sometimes we get caught up in a certain sound. If we don’t constantly keep ourselves aware of new artists and new music, we’ll get left behind..Smile with me :)
